Veteran journalist and author Philip Lee is equally at home in a newsroom as he is in the classroom. In fact, he’s spent the last 18 years teaching his passion for writing and reporting to new generations of journalists at St. Thomas University in Fredericton.
At St. Thomas, Lee helped launch New Brunswick’s first English language degree programs in journalism and communications, partnered with CBC New Brunswick and other news organizations to create countless internships and careers for his students and established two flagship university endowments that fund annual public lecture series, scholarships and student-centred events.
Lee challenges his students to be careful, responsible journalists while ensuring they have the creative skills to adapt to the changing digital landscape of modern storytelling. “Our job is to give students a toolbox to be able to report on platforms that haven’t even been invented yet,” Lee says.
